What do hair stylists do when they ';thin out your hair';?

How do they do it? And what difference does it make when it's thinned out? Is it like it reduces volume? (that would help me a lot, I have a lot of hair, also very thick) Can you do it on your own? What do hair stylists do when they ';thin out your hair';?
When someone thins your hair, they make it not as thick.

I'm pretty sure stylists use a razor, but you can't do it yourself.

=)What do hair stylists do when they ';thin out your hair';?
They take thinning shears and for each section of your hair they will use those and cut with them at an angle. They have ';teeth'; and it doesn't cut all the hair just what is between the teeth. The difference is absolutely amazing! You can tell that it is not as thick as before and the person notices that it doesn't feel as heavy as it did (feels much lighter). If you know how to do it by yourself then go ahead but you have to have the right implements. You also have to know what angle to cut it at and how much to do or you could make some extremely short spiky spots and if you don't want those then you won't be happy.
Well the way my stylist thinned my hair was by taking a small, metal, comb-like thing, and taking short brushes from the root to tip. It didn't take very long, and just gives your hair a more airy feel to it so it's not as heavy and thick. You can't really see the difference, but you can feel it, it helps a lot. I'm guessing you could do it on your own if you wanted, it didn't seem like a complicated process, but I'd leave my hair up to the experts.
they cut it with these scissors that only cut some of the hairs, so you get a bunch of different hair lengths instead of them all being the longest.

when they thin it out, they usually layer it. like cut it with a razor in different lengths so it's not as bulky. i dont think you can do it on your own.
They layer it, and use those thinning shears. Yeah, they make your hair less massive and thick.

It's hard to do on your own, I wouln't recommend it.
You can try.... It means just shedding off the hair i think

You can try taking a razor and just brushing it along your hair... I once did that and it started thinning my hair!
They razor or lengthen it, i have thick hair as well :(

Get it straightened, it won't feel as if you got that much hair!
I have thick *** hair. Basically they use these scissors and it feels like they're pulling out your hair. It makes it look not as frizzy...for me at least
they give you layers instead of it being all one length. that stops it from being POOFY!
they razor it. I have really thick hair too, it helps ALOT!!!! :)
