Hair stylist as a career...?

I'm a freshman in high school and really interested in hair and makeup and the hole cosmetology thing. I plan on going to boces for it for 2 years.

I was just wondering what its like to be a hair stylist, the things you go through, the pros and cons. The salary and what you need to do in order to be successful

thanks so much!

Being a hairstylist is HARD WORK. I went to beauty school out of high school and have been a hair stylest for 4 years. Trust me when i say its not an easy career and it is definately not the easy way out.

Pros: Fast cash money - IF YOUR GOOD and have a steady clientelle which takes years to build- however you will bust your butt making it.

Cons: You get treated like a peon by your high paying clientelle for not going to college or having a degree. You work HARD for every dollar you earn. Cash job so you have to do your own taxes. Carpel tunnel, back problems, ABSOLUTELY NO JOB BENEFITS, SNOOTY SNOOTY coworkers WHO NEVER GROW UP (drama drama drama), Hard to deal with bosses, you have to work at least 5-7 years in most salons to EVER have a sunday off, you will NEVER have a saturday off... these are just off the top of my head

The average hair stylist only does hair for ten years and moves on to bigger and better things- AND NOW I KNOW WHY lol. and the ones that have been doing it for 30 and 40 years (i work with them) are bitter, completely burned out of their career, and hate doing it- even though they put on a happy face for their clients (trust me they talk a lot of dirt about them the second they leave their side).

ADVICE- Only pursue cosmetology if you have a real passion for it. I had no idea what i wanted to do when i graduated high school. I only now recently have come to a decison of what i would like to go to school for and am pursuing it HAPPILY (its an escape from the difficulties of working in a salon). If your unsure of what type of career you should pursue out of high school, just take a break and get a regular full time job. it will come to you eventually. TRUST ME. I wish i had someone giving me this advice 5 years ago before i dumped $13,000 on beauty school to enter a dead end career.Hair stylist as a career...?
